One of our residents in NorthWest Crossing recently coordinated a ”Meet & Greet” in Compass Park for all people 55 and older living in NWX who were interested in getting to know their neighbors. Event attendees were asked to bring a finger food to share, their own beverage and chairs, while event coordinators provided all the paper goods. The group, which ended up being about 45 people, gathered in Compass Park the evening of June 12 a couple of hours. There was even music from the local Ukulele Group. It was a great way to get to know others living in the neighborhood – keep an eye out for another event like this being planned soon. It will be listed on our new NorthWest Crossing event calendar.

NorthWest Crossing is featured in a brand-new book by Simmons Buntin and Ken Pirie called Unsprawl: Remixing Spaces as Places. The book, released last month by Planetizen Press, highlights twelve communities that were developed as innovative alternatives to urban sprawl. NorthWest Crossing was included in the book as an example of a new community that highlights the essence of good urban design while also creating a sense of place and an economically-successful result for the developers, West Bend Property Company.

The new book addresses the unsustainable, auto-centric, environmentally-damaging ways in which new suburban communities have been built over the last half-century and the challenges this presents for our quality of life. NorthWest Crossing is one of a dozen case studies from throughout North America that are examined in Unsprawl to reveal successful strategies “employed to introduce new patterns of development into a regulatory, cultural and financial landscape” in order to help to discourage sprawl in the future.

NorthWest Crossing’s vision and design is rooted in the landscape and urban fabric of Bend. Streets are designed to protect mature Ponderosa pines and are well-connected with the existing Bend street network. The neighborhood features a balance of jobs, housing types retail, schools, recreation, civic uses, parks and natural places. Residents benefit from homes built to Earth Advantage and ENERGY STAR standards, access to alternative transportation and amenities, such as a 59-plot community garden and an extensive trail system connecting to the National Forests west of Bend as well as the thriving Downtown Bend core.

“We hope people can learn from what we and other communities have experienced while trying to combat urban sprawl with new ideas and innovative visions. This book will help to highlight how we can all start to live and think sustainably when it comes to growth, and NorthWest Crossing was excited to be included as a case study,” said David Ford, general manager for NWX.

We are so excited that fabulous, growing local companies have chosen NorthWest Crossing as their home! Long-term “resident” Ruffwear Performance Dog Gear is leaving its location on York Drive to take over the larger space south of Summit High at 2843 NW Lolo Drive. Hydro Flask is moving from Bend’s east side to take over Ruffwear’s former space. It’s all so serendipitous!

Scott Allen, CEO of Hydro Flask, explained, “Since our start in 2009, we have seen tremendous growth, and we’ve come to the point where we’ve outgrown our current space. We chose NorthWest Crossing because it’s a vibrant neighborhood with a great sense of community and values, which is important to Hydro Flask. The timing with the vacancy of Ruffwear’s headquarters couldn’t have been better and the space will allow us to continue to expand and grow with our employees.”

Ruffwear is also excited about their move, which will allow them to bring all aspects of their business under one 21,000-square-foot roof.

Patrick Kruse, owner and founder of Ruffwear, said, “We are all looking forward to the opportunities that our new space will inspire. The views out of our office perch allow me to feel like a kid sitting in a tree house, envisioning the ideas and dreams that accompany those experiences. The new building’s huge distribution center allows us to continually improve our logistics processes. Our new design and development center will be decked out with new tools that rival Santa’s workshop, allowing us to quickly cobble together whatever we conjure up for our four-legged friends and their human companions.”

Ruffwear expects to begin operating out of its space on Lolo Drive at the end of this month, and Hydro Flask will be relocating soon after. Between them, the companies employ more than 30 people locally. We’re so excited that they both call NorthWest Crossing home!

The nation was devastated by last week’s school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. However, communities all over the nation are rallying behind this small town and NorthWest Crossing is no exception. If you’re looking for a way you and your family can support Newtown, please consider creating a snowflake for their new school!

When school resumes for Sandy Hook, it will be in a new building. Parent-volunteers are working to ensure that the students are welcomed back by a winter wonderland with theentire school decorated with as many unique snowflakes as possible. They

are encouraging artists to be as creative as possible, remembering that no two snowflakes are alike. Please bring your snowflake to the West Bend Property Company office located above portello by January 7th. We will ship all snowflakes from NorthWest Crossing to the Connecticut PTSA, coordinators of this effort.

Thank you for your help and may you hug your loved ones a little tighter this holiday season…

Congratulations to Greg Welch Construction, one of our NorthWest Crossing Guild Builders, for being named Earth Advantage Builder of the Month!

One of our core goals at NorthWest Crossing is sustainability when it comes to our built environment, and our Guild Builders meet Earth Advantage or ENERGY STAR guildelines with every home they build. Greg Welch Construction has been recognized by the statewide Earth Advantage program for his commitment to buliding healthy, livable homes with attention to detail.

See the complete article on Greg Welch here, in which Earth Advantage mentions that his company was selected for the honor because of they build People-Centric Homes with Enduring Craftsmanship; have shown a true commitment to Green Building; match their homes to the Neighborhoods in which they build (like NorthWest Crossing); and have spent Decades Creating Beautiful Homes.
